Markup is a language formulated by annotating text in a document. Tags are used for annotation and function in unique ways in different markup languages. For example, in Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), the tags instruct how text should display, while in Extensible Markup Language (XML), the tags are used to define the data being stored or transmitted.
